Actually the best way to move the server metadata is to use norton-reinit,

One caveat is that norton-reinit doesn't know how to deal with
copy-on-write files in the backup volumes, so backup and clone volumes
have to be removed before the dump starts, or skipped during the reload

Only the RVM-data layout on the client has changed, I have too much data
stored on my own servers to arbitrarily break server RVM between releases.
