i have a month old backup (the last reliable backup i was able to make
before backups started crashing codasrv), which i am about to restore
to a new volume. hopefully the original volume is recoverable.

indeed. i had been running a replicated setup, but after too many
server-server conflicts that would cause our service to fail, i
went back to a single server setup.

yeah, i tried doing backups on the file level, but venus would always
return with "connection timed out", and my backups would fail.

heh, i have very bad luck in the realm of backups.
