That is a bit unfair to Coda.  The mailing list is mainly for
providing support to people having problems so, of course, you get to
hear about all the ugly things that can happen to you when something
goes wrong.  People posting "it works fine for me" messages would get
pretty tedious.

It sounds like it would do well for you, modulo what Jan has said
about the asynchronous nature of ADSL.  I can also confirm that I have
the same situation that you describe apart from the DSL and it works
fine for me.  I use Coda for doing my software development so I can
automatically replicate my work to another machine (data backup)

Probably neither - being cautious is ok.  As Jan pointed out there are
mechanisms that can help prevent a catastrophic data loss (I have used
those a couple of times).  I would suggest you try out Coda, make
frequent backups of your work while you familiarise yourself with it's
