I went through and tried compiling using 2.95.2 instead of the stock
2.91.66 that comes with SuSE 6.3 and venus loaded fully. Unfortunutlay
it spit back the following messages as well:

16:15:12 starting HDB scan
16:15:12 0 hdb entries in table
16:15:12 0 hdb entries on free-list
16:15:12 Kernel version ioctl failed (Inappropriate ioctl for device)!
16:15:12 2.3 or later kernels require an updated kernel module!
16:15:12 Initial LRDB allocation
16:15:12 Getting Root Volume information...
16:15:27 GetRootVolume: can't get root volume name!
16:15:42 Fatal Signal (11); pid 9731 becoming a zombie...
16:15:42 You may use gdb to attach to 9731

Funny thing is that Im using linux kernel 2.2.14 and that apearently
somewhere in it trying to clean up after itself from GetRootVolume it
caught a sig11. I think part of it belongs to the pointer/integer
typcasting I noticed on the second compile....
