Ahh !  How come I *did* forget such an important step !  Thanks
for pointing out my mistake ....

With the right procedure, now I can restart venus without rebooting
my machine.  I can do that with coda kernel modules of both 
linux 2.0.30 and 2.1.90.

[root_at_aria fs]# vutil -shutdown
[root_at_aria fs]# umount /coda
[root_at_aria fs]# venus &
[1] 1097

(and venus will be restarted)
